John Maurer is recognized as an “exhilarating, very versatile trumpet performer and educator” (Jose Sibaja, lead trumpet, Boston Brass). Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, John graduated as the trumpet graduate assistant at the Pennsylvania State University with his master’s degree in Trumpet Performance as well as receiving his bachelor’s degree in Music Education with a concentration in Trumpet Performance from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. John had the honor of studying under such trumpet players as Larry Davidson, Dr. Langston J. Fitzgerald, III, Jumaane Smith, Dr. N. Keith Wiley, Jose Sibaja and Wynton Marsalis.
John has performed in various venues around North America, ranging from the Arizona Biltmore, the Lincoln Center – Alice Tully Hall to the Curtis Institute of Music in Pennsylvania and the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada where he performed for the Brass Residency in 2010 and 2012. Maurer has conducted a number of residencies and masterclasses in many renowned colleges and universities such as SUNY – Purchase, University of Richmond, Weber State University in Ogden, Utah and Arkansas State University where he performed the premiere of Peter Meechan’s “Orpheus” with a combo orchestration. In March 2014, John was selected as a semi-finalist for the “National Trumpet Competition”.
John has shared the stage and recorded with many known musicians and ensembles such as Jens Lindemann, Howard Johnson, Awadagin Pratt, Eddie Henderson, Slide Hampton, Les Brown, Jr., Dan Tepfer, Sharon Little, Saint Elouise, the New Age Brass, Andy Mowatt’s Steely Jam, PRIZM DUO and the Agora Brass Ensemble. John has been privileged enough to perform as a soloist for public figures such as The Reverend Jesse L. Jackson and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex as well as representing his home city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by performing the United States of America, “National Anthem” in Citizens Bank Park for the Philadelphia Phillies. Recently, John held the trumpet chair at the “American Music Theatre” located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania from 2015-2016.
In May 2014 and 2015, John was given the opportunity to travel and perform in a musical and cultural exploration tour of Cuba. While there, John traveled from Santiago de Cuba, Trinidad and Havana, performing with musicians from Cuba and United States of America.
John exclusively uses “Pickett Brass” mouthpieces and “Gard Bags”. He currently holds the position as Teaching Artist for the historic Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, New York while also being the head of the trumpet studio and instructing private music lessons at the Milford School of Music in Milford, Pennsylvania.
